Gro Folkan talks to us about her art, answering 10 questions, using the 5 W’s
(Who, What, Where, When, Why).
WHO
Who are you?
I am always looking for meaning in the language of people, but mostly in Nature. I have had 33 solo exhibitions of my paintings, domestic and internationally. Purchased by museums, institutions and collections.
Who are your favorite artists?
Jan Vermeer, Francis Bacon, Joseph Beuys, Matthew Barney, Andrej Tarkovskij, film maker.
WHAT
What themes does your art focus on?
Meaning, flow and focus.
What is your hallmark as an artist?
Meaning, pictorial techniques that I have invented myself.
What music or other audio do you listen to while you work?
I love music. I like to listen to South Sami Yoik, but when I work I listen to the silence.
WHEN
When did you decide that art was part of you and your life?
I have always been like this: when I was a few years old I took butter from my sandwiches and coal from an oven and painted on the walls of my parents living room!
WHERE
Where do you work on your artwork?
Physically I work mostly in my studio. In a manner of speaking, I work wherever I am, always.
Where would you like to see your artworks exhibited?
In large galleries, practical for large pictures, suitable for the total impact that I want to achieve.
WHY
Why do you make art?
The important images are not the colours and lines of my paintings, but the images coming into being in the minds of the onlookers.
Why do you think art is important in our society?
Especially in our time and society when most of it is surface and shallows, to get in contact with our inner images.
