Stefan Damman talks to us about his art, answering 10 questions, using the 5 W’s

(Who, What, Where, When, Why).

Who are you?

My name is Stefan Damman. Born in 1969, Amsterdam the Netherlands. I am a Painter, Designer and Tattooartist.

Who are your favourite artists?

My favorite artists are: Amadeo Modigliani, Jean Michel Basquiat and Shinkichi Tajiri.

What themes does your art focus on?

The main focus in terms of themes in my work are the short fragments we all as ppl encounter. Shards of conversations, the sound of the TV, The images we see while passing windows in the street, Parts of lyrics in songs that stick in your mind. Combined they make for other stories. From the painters point of view but also for the beholder.

What is your hallmark as an artist?

I guess my hallmark is the second layer in my work. Some may look basic but there is always a second layer to think about and to contemplate. Weather its a mood or a deeper filosophy, there is always this ‘extra’s.

What music or other audio do you listen to while you work?

While painting I love to listen to the music and lyrics of Nick Cave, Depeche Mode, Radiohead, Urban Dance Squad or the Pixies. The music mostly resonates my kind of mood at that moment.

When did you decide that art was part of you and your life?

As most kids around the age of 15 I was kind of lazy. Hanging on the couch. something that really got on my fathers nerves. One day he was fed up with my behavior. And even though he wasn’t an art lover he ordered me to get into his car to go for a drive. After a while we ended up at some museum. A museum! I thought I was going to die. Who needs art? Walking with my father through this museum was hell. Until the moment I walked into this sculpture made by Shinkichi Tajiri. I stil can not explain what happened but exactly at that moment I decided I needed to make art.

Where do you work on your artwork?

Fortunately I work in my own studio. Where I most of the time also sleep. It gives me complete freedom to experiment at any time of the day at any season.

Where would you like to see your artworks exhibited?

Anywhere really, of Course a show in the Uffizi would be wonderful or in the Tate Gallery or The MOMA in New York. But actually I really love it when people hang my work at home, to enjoy.

Why do you make art?

That’s a tough question, because my inner soul told me to do so? Making art is really a journey into my own sound.

Why do you think art is important in our society?

My personal opinion is that art is actually a reaction to the world’s status at that point. It can be anti or pro, but still a reflection. Even so, Modern technologie lets us exhibit work at any place at any time. Another thing is that we walk through the street actually unaware about the amount of art out there that soothes our minds. And we take it for granted. But take art out of the streets, away from people and life gets boring and soulless.
